Skip to content- Mooren’s ulcer is a type of keratitis that causes damage to and degeneration of the cornea.
- It is generally seen along the edges of the cornea and is thereby also known as peripheral ulcerative keratitis.
- It is an extremely rare condition but cases have been reported frequently in China, India and Africa.
- There are two types of Mooren’s ulcer, namely:
- Limited or benign type – It doesn’t cause pain or discomfort and affects one eye only in most of the cases
- Atypical or malignant type – It usually happens in both eyes and is more painful
- Symptoms :
- Intense pain and redness in the affected eye
- Thinning of the corneal tissue
- Photophobia
- Iritis
- Causes :
- Exact aetiological factor is unidentified
- It may be an autoimmune disorder
- Treatment :
- Topical treatments
- Antibiotics – moxifloxacin
- Interferon a2b
- Resection
- Cryotherapy
- Tissue adhesion
