  • Tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors are some of the commonly used antidepressants.
  • These agents however are known to cause many side effects and hence their use is restricted. The most common side effect produced by these agents is serotonin syndrome (SS).
  • In SS, there is too much of serotonin in the body and this in turn produces an array of symptoms ranging from shivering to muscle rigidity and seizures.
  • Reboxetine is a novel, selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that goes not have any serotonin-potentiating effect.
  • It exerts the antidepressant effect by inhibiting the presynaptic norepinephrine reuptake.
  • It has been found to increase resting heart rate, pupil diameter, reduce salivation and pupillary light reflex.
  • Overdose of reboxetine is characterized by mydriasis, diaphoresis, anxiety, mild hypertension, sinus tachycardia and tremor. These are corrected by the use of phentolamine, benzodiazepenes, gastrointestinal decontamination and other therapies that are deemed necessary.
