Swine flu, also known as the H1N1 virus, is a comparatively recent strain of influenza, that originates in pigs but is mainly transmitted from one person to another. If we consider the technical meaning, this type of flu mainly refers to influenza in pigs. However, affected pigs might transmit the infection to humans, in occasional circumstances.

Swine flu was observed in MEXICO for the first time, and emerged in the year 2009, when the scientists came across a strain of flu virus that was referred as H1N1. It was responsible for the production of various respiratory symptoms, collectively referred to as SWINE FLU. It was soon declared by WHO as a global pandemic, as people from all around the world got affected.

How does swine flu spread?
  • The transmission only occurs from one person to another, and not from animal to person.
  • It is extremely contagious and is transmitted via ingestion or inhalation of droplets loaded with viruses, when coughing or sneezing.
  • It must be noted, that contrary to the common belief, swine flu is not transmitted by consumption of cooked pork.

  • Fever (100°F or higher) along with chills
  • Sore throat and barking cough
  • Headache
  • Running nose
  • Fatigue and generalized body pains
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Loose stool
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Some individuals may develop severe respiratory symptoms, for instance, shortness of breath.

Incubation period is 1 to 4 days (average duration- 2 days). The duration of flu usually lasts from three to seven days and may extend to almost 10 days, if severe. In patients affected by swine flu, death usually occurs due to bacterial infection of lungs.

How can swine flu be prevented?

  • Vaccination is, no doubt the best way to ensure prevention or reduction of becoming infected with influenza viruses.
  • It is very important to keep nasal secretions away from unaffected people, by disposing it off using tissues.

Swine flu can be prevented by various ways, that are as follows :

  • The H1N1 flu virus can survive on various surfaces and objects such as table tops, glasses, spoons and thus, it must be made sure that you don’t touch your eyes, mouth or nose.
  • Wash your hands frequently with a hand sanitizer.
  • It’s suggested that you stay at home, for a day or two, if feeling unwell.
  • If the spread of swine flu is at peak, you must avoid going into large public gatherings or crowds.
