Lumbar puncture is a process in which cerebrospinal fluid is withdrawn by the help of needle. Cerebrospinal fluid is a fluid surrounding the spinal cord.

Uses: – Lumbar puncture is used to identify infections, chronic inflammatory disorders. Cerebrospinal fluid is useful to identify count of WBC, RBC, blood glucose level and protein level. Also it is useful in the diagnosis bacterial, viral, fungal infection and abnormal cell.

Procedure: -Before starting procedure patient must tell all about his medical history and current medication he used. All pathological tests are conducted before exam to identify internal body conditions. Physician gives all instruction about the diet and medication. Patient must avoid intake of blood thinners and pain killers. Before procedure patient have to wear hospital gown, and lie down specific position which help to easily reached between the vertebrae. Procedure area is washed with the antiseptic and cover with the sterile sheet. Physician gives local anesthesia to the patient. Then thin hollow needle is inserted between the two lumbar vertebrae through spinal membrane. After needle placement Patient asks to change the position. Cerebrospinal fluid is measure, then withdrawn of some cerebrospinal fluid and again measure the cerebrospinal fluid. If necessary drug substance is injected. After completing procedure needle is removed and puncture side is cover with bandage. The all procedure is conducted within 40- 60 minute.
