Liver biopsy is process in which tissue sample is collected by using small insertion of needle. Liver biopsy is conducted to evaluate abnormalities in the liver. Liver biopsy is a safe process but sometimes complications like internal bleeding, leakage of bile from liver, pneumothorax are occurs. Liver biopsy is conducted by two ways

  1. Laparoscopic biopsy: – In this type of biopsy thin light tube with camera attachment are inserted into the abdomen by the help of abdomen. It helps obtained liver images. This method is useful to obtained tissue from specific sides.
  2. Transvenous biopsy: – This method is used for the patient having blood clotting problem. In this process needle is place into the catheter and catheter inserted into vein in neck to liver And take the sample.
    • Uses: – Doctor suggest liver biopsy when they see continuous abnormalities found in liver enzyme test. Jaundice, abnormality seen in ultrasound, CT scan, nuclear scan or liver enlargement.
    • Procedure:-Patient must give knowledge about their medical history and current medications to the doctor. Pregnant woman must tell their physician about her pregnancy before procedure. Doctor must have to give all knowledge about the biopsy procedure and the all instruction. Laboratory tests are carried out before the biopsy procedure. Doctor asks patient to wear hospital gown and lie on the back. The suitable body position for biopsy is right elbow is outside position and right hand is put on head. Doctor gives small dose of sedative before starting procedure. Doctor makes small insertion on upper abdomen and insert needle to take small sample of liver tissue. After procedure patient puts in observation room for four hours. Patient must avoid the physical activities and driving for at least one day.
