No drugs are officially approved as a treatment option for Corona virus Disease-2019 (COVID-19). Chloroquine, and its derivative hydroxychloroquine, are popular anti-malarial drugs. These were tested on COVID-19 infected individuals and showed drastic improvement in their health, although they do not offer a complete treatment.
Chloroquine shows the capacity of inhibiting the regeneration and replication of several micro-organisms in vitro, including strains of coronavirus. The anti-viral and anti-inflammatory action of the drug has been an important factor for its use as a treatment option. These drugs are taken orally in the form of pills and various blood parameters (RBCs, WBCs, platelets), renal function, and blood glucose levels are constantly monitored.
There are no drugs or vaccines available right now that completely cure COVID-19.
