Fibroids are smooth musclestumours. Uterine fibroids are very common in women of reproductive age and most of them do not grow during pregnancy. There is about 12.5% chance of finding a fibroid of size 3.5 cm on physical examination. Performing an ultrasound may increase these chances by about 1.5-2.7%. Although most fibroids are asymptomatic, some may present themselves with severe abdominal pain which is localised. This abdominal pain is observed in women who present fibroids that are greater than 5cm in size. These fibroids can result in complications during pregnancy like increased chances of miscarriage or bleeding, placental abruption, restriction in foetal growth and increased chances of foetal abnormalities.
