1969 – 79 The century-old business conglomerate made its first foray into healthcare by unveiling the cutting-edge healthcare facility in Kolkata. It was the first private hospital of the city, and late B M Birla laid the foundation stone along with Y B Chavan, the then defense minister of India. Integration of research into clinical practice and provision of quality medical care to all sections of society was the hospital’s guiding principle.
