The COVID-19 disease caused by the Nsars-CoV-2 virus primarily affects the lungs causing atypical pneumonia. However, it is now being realized that COVID-19 is no longer a pulmonary disease, but a systemic disease, which involves multiple systems including the nervous system. The virus possibly enters the nervous system via 2 routes. Firstly, through the cribriform plate of ethmoid bone (from the nose to the cranial cavity) and secondly via hematogenous spread(viremia). Besides, it can also cause brain damage by narrowing and inflaming the intima of the cerebral blood vessels leading to microemboli, multiple infarcts, and stroke. The symptoms include:

Fever with Headache

Neurological deficits like loss of smell (anosmia), loss of taste, loss of balance (ataxia), and convulsions.

Loss of involuntary control of breathing, resulting in acute respiratory distress, which requires ventilator assistance.

Seizures, Meningo-Encephalitis, and cerebrovascular accidents/strokes
