Hormones, also known as chemical messengers, are released in blood by the endocrine organs and act at their target organs. They are required for the control and coordination of various body activities and also regulate normal growth and development. Diseases, medications, surgical interventions, and lifestyle disorders can all contribute to hormonal imbalances. Stress and eating disorders are also considered risk factors for developing hormonal imbalances especially the hypothalamo-pituitary axis which is the main seat of endocrine functioning and regulation. Metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypo/hyperthyroidism, polycystic ovarian syndrome are also implicated in causing a hormonal disequilibrium.
