Glottis, supraglottis, and subglottis are the three parts of the larynx. Hypopharynx is the lower part of the throat. The starting point of Hypopharynx is behind the nose called the nasopharynx. Cancer can develop at any part of larynx and pharynx. Cancer is unwanted and unnatural growth of healthy cells that form a tumor. In the laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer above 90-95% of cancers are squamous cell carcinomas.
- Risk factors: – people who chew tobacco or drink alcohol are high-risk peoples for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer. Also, data shows than men are having more risk of cancer than a woman. The people more than age 55 are at high risk for cancer. Black and white people have more risk of cancer than Asian people. People who work in wood dust and paint smell also have a high risk of cancer. Poor nutrition is one of the reasons for cancer.
- Symptoms:– change in voice within 10 days, mass in the neck, noisy breathing, difficulty in breathing, swallowing, Ear pain, severe bad breath, choking, weight loss, fatigue.
- Diagnosis: – Physical examination is carried out by doctors to observe mass in neck lip gum or cheek. Also for the detection of any abnormalities in the structure of nose mouth throat and tongue doctor check it. For proper diagnosis doctor performed laryngoscopy, PET, CT, CAT, MRI, bone scan, ultrasound, and modified barium swallow test.
- Treatment: – Three main treatments for the laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer that are Radiation therapy, Surgery, and chemotherapy, or a combination of three therapies are used to treat cancer. The direction of treatment is based on the stage of cancer.
