How can it be cured naturally?
Neonatal jaundice may be physiological or pathological. Physiological jaundice develops as a result of the inability of the liver to metabolize bilirubin as the hepatic system is not well developed immediately after birth. It is mild and disappears on its own within 1 to 2 weeks. The natural methods of accentuating its cure include:
Increasing the frequency of breast-feeding: An increased feed will result in a faster transit of milk through the gut and more excretion of bilirubin in the stools. Exclusive breastfeeding must be practiced (usually till 6 months) and the infants should be fed 4-10 times a day during the first seven days.
Supplemental Feeds: If the baby does not feed properly or has lost significant weight due to diarrhoea, formula feed is also advised along with/instead of breastfeeding.
However, moderate to severe cases of pathological jaundice must undergo neonatal hospitalization and receive appropriate therapy in the form of phototherapy (by placing the baby under blue light) or intravenous immunoglobulin therapy as is advised by the doctor.
