Chlorine is a chemical used in a variety of everyday products like disinfectant in swimming pools, drinking water, and is also used as an active ingredient in a lot of cleaning products. Chlorine poisoning occurs when an individual touches, swallows, or inhales chlorine. When Inge, the chlorine reacts with water in the digestive tract producing hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid which, are both, poisonous. Respiratory symptoms include coughing, fluid build-up inside the lungs, and difficulty breathing. Digestive symptoms include vomiting, pain in the throat and stomach, presence of blood in stools, and burning sensation in the mouth. It also disrupts the pH balance of the blood and causes a drop in blood pressure. The treatment for chlorine poisoning is extremely simple. For external irritations washing with soap and water is usually enough. For internal problems, it is advised to consume milk or water immediately unless you vomit. For respiratory symptoms, breathing in the fresh air helps. For extremely severe cases, hospitalization may be required where the individual may be intubated and given mechanical respiration.
