Human bilharziasis is caused by S.haematobium, S.mansoni, S japonicum and S. mekongi.

  • Cause: – infection is occurring when the skin comes in contact with fresh water in which schistosomes infected snails are living. Also when infected people are urinating in water or Schistosoma eggs are present in water. Schistosoma parasite penetrates into the skin while bathing swimming or washing the skin from contaminated water.
  • Symptoms: – After getting infected the person may develop rash itchy skin. Fever, chills, cough and muscle aches.in adults, these eggs travel through intestine, liver or bladder and cause infection to this organ. This parasite may get damage to the liver, intestine, lungs, and bladder.
  • Diagnosis: – Diagnosis is conducted by testing the samples of blood stool and urine of the patient.
  • Treatment:- Praziquantel is the most effective drug to treat bilharziasis infection
