A Carotid Ultrasound or a Carotid Doppler is an imaging technique used by the doctors to diagnose obstructions in the blood flow through the carotid arteries in your neck. These arteries are responsible for carrying blood to the brain and any obstruction in them can cause serious psychological as well as physical problems such as a stroke. The test is deemed harmless as it uses sound waves to image the internal structures of the body.
The patient is asked to lie on his back and gel is applied on the part of the neck through which the ultrasound will be obtained. The ultrasound transducer is put on the neck where gel is applied and an image of the blood flowing through the arteries is visible on the screen.
This method is not only applied to check for any blockages in the arteries but to also check and evaluate the position of stents, to check for the presence of nay blood clots, or to detect any abnormalities in the artery.
