Cystourethrogram is an imaging technique which involves taking X-ray images of your bladder and urethra while urinating. Usually a contrast material is injected in your bladder by a catheter which shows up quite nicely on the X-ray. A cystourethrogram is performed to detect any infections in the urinary tract, look for injuries in the bladder or urethra, check for structural problems, or to check for any backflow of fluid/urine.
Before the procedure, you should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or if you have an IUD, if you’re allergic to iodine dye, or if you’ve had X-ray in the past week. During the procedure, you are asked to lie down and a catheter is inserted into your empty bladder and is then filled with the contrast material until the bladder is full. You are then asked to urinate while the X-rays are taken. The whole process takes about 30-40 minutes to perform. You may feel slight burning while urinating. After the procedure you are advised to drink lots of fluids and pinkish urine is expected. You should contact your doctor immediately if you see any blood clots or red urine.
