A digital rectal exam is performed to check the lower rectum and nearby internal organs to check for any infections or inflammation. It is also performed in men to check for an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer. It also helps diagnose rectal tumours, extent of anal haemorrhoids, and causes of rectal bleeding. During the exam, you will be asked to lie on you side and pull your knees to your chest, the doctor would then insert gloved and lubricated finger into your anus and check for any enlargement of the prostate, in men, or feel for any bumps that might indicate rectal cancer.
It is also performed in women to check the space between your rectum and vagina. It is normal to feel discomfort and have an urge to urinate. People with haemorrhoids may experience some bleeding which should stop on its own. It is not suitable procedure for detecting colon cancer. The doctor may also ask you to submit a stool sample for further investigation.
