What is Erythema?

  • Erythema or skin redness is due to hyperemia in superficial capillaries that is associated with injury, inflammation and infection.
  • Causes :
    • Infection,
    • Massage,
    • Electrical treatment,
    • Acne medications,
    • Allergies,
    • Exercise,
    • Sunburn or solar radiation,
    • Photosensitization,
    • Acute radiation syndrome,
    • Mercury toxicity,
    • Blister agents,
    • Niacin administration,
    • Waxing and tweezing of then hairs
    • Exposure to ionizing radiation during radiotherapy also results in erythema.
  • It usually goes away in a few weeks on its own. However, medications like corticosteroids, antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed if the condition persists for long.
