  • PVNS is an idiopathic neoplastic synovial diseases that is characterized by the overgrowth of synovium that eventually worsens and leads to bone damage and arthritis.
  • It is of two types :
    • Localized PVNS – tumor localized to one area of the joint
    • Diffuse PVNS – involves the entire joint and is difficult to treat
  • Exact etiology not known. It is diagnosed by x-rays, magnetic resonance imaging scan, joint aspiration and biopsy.
  • Symptoms :
    • Swelling and pain in the affected joint
    • Locking, catching and instability in the joint
    • Joint stiffness
  • Treatment includes surgical procedures like arthroscopy, open surgery, total knee replacement, radiation therapy and drugs that target Colony Stimulating Factor -1 Receptor protein.
