Pneumonectomy is a process in which whole lung are remove. Lungs are two large organ of respiratory system which filter oxygen from air and put it into blood. Lugs extract harmful substances like smock pollution, bacteria and viruses. Pneumonectomy is carried out when lung get damage due to lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma, traumatic injury, disseminated thymomas, bronchial obstruction. Pneumonectomy is carried out by following two types.

  1. Traditional/standard Pneumonectomy: – In this type of Pneumonectomy the whole lung is removed.
  2. Extrapleural Pneumonectomy: – In this type of Pneumonectomy the part of pericardium, diaphragm and pleura membrane is also remove with the lung.
  • Side effect: – Pneumonectomy process need ventilator or respirator for the breathing support, anesthesia given to the patient during surgery may cause allergic reactions like wheezing, rashes, swelling or low blood pressure, bleeding. Also Pneumonectomy shows heart related issues like irregular heart beat heart attack. Infection to the incision side may occur. Pneumonectomy may cause kidney failure, injury to the lungs related blood vessels, shortness of breath.
  • Care should be taken: – Patient required minimum ten days stay in hospital with ventilator and tubes. Patient instructs to keep incision dry, take a rest and avoid activity that causes pain as well as not to lift heavy things, avoid smocking. Patient must have to regularly record heart rate and check fever. If patient says any drainage, redness sealing or pain at incision site, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, yellow green sputum must need to contact doctor immediately.
