A prostate-specific Antigen blood Test is performed to test for prostate cancer in men. Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) is produced by both, cancerous and non-cancerous cells of the prostate. High levels of PSA usually indicate the presence of cancer. An enlarged or inflamed prostate can also increase the PSA levels. Although the PSA test is performed as a regular blood test, the doctor may also recommend a physical rectal exam to check for an inflamed prostate.

PSA test is not a deterministic test for screening cancer. It is done to merely determine if there are any chances of the individual having cancerous tissue. Any abnormal results may indicate the need for a biopsy to confirm the presence of cancerous cells. For men who have already been diagnosed with a prostate cancer, the test can be used to determine if the treatment is effective or if the cancer has returned.
