A nevus is a benign proliferation of epidermal cells and melanocytes. Becker’s nevus is a non-cancerous benign growth that is brown-black in color and progressively grows darker with age. It presents as a lesion along the shoulder and upper trunk, which is hyperpigmented (excessive melanin pigmentation) and has hypertrichosis (excessive hair growth). It is an idiopathic condition (unknown etiology) but it is postulated to be triggered by androgens-testosterone mainly.
Usually, it does not require treatment. However, treatment may be sought for cosmetic reasons, in particular, hypertrichosis and hyperpigmentation. Using LASER-assisted hair removal/ Nd: YAG laser treatment.
It is also infrequently associated with skeletal or muscular deformities as a broader condition known as Becker’s Nevus Syndrome.
