Stereotactic Biopsy uses mammography to help locate any abnormal growth in the breast tissue and cut a sample of it for further examination to test for cancer. This method is less invasive compared to the standard surgical biopsies and produces minimal scarring. It is also proved as an excellent method to test for calcium deposits or small masses that do not show up on an ultrasound. Before the test, the person may be asked to change into a hospital gown and asked to remove all kinds of metallic item from their body including jewellery and dentures. They are also asked to not wear any kinds of deodorants, perfumes, lotions, or powders in their armpits.
A digital mammography is performed which helps the doctor to localise the mass and a small cut is then made nearby. The doctor can then remove any abnormal mass through this cut or perform a biopsy. The procedure is generally done on an outpatient basis and you can go back home the same day. The results may be available on your follow-up meeting with the doctor. After the procedure it is advised to avoid any kind of strenuous activity for a minimum period of 24 hours. There will be some scarring and pain, which is normal. But you should contact you doctor immediately if you experience excessive pain, burning sensation, or bleeding and discharge from the breast.
