Definition: This is a surgical technique in which small incisions are made to allow the entry of a thoracoscope ( small device with video cameras) into the chest to transmit images of this region for assisting the doctor in surgeries.

Procedure:

  • Cardiac evaluation and pulmonary function tests are done to assess if this surgery is required for the patient.
  • The patient is anesthetized and is connected with a breathing tube for oxygen supply to the body.
  • Generally, small incisions (1-inch) are made on the chest and the surgical instruments, as well as thoracoscope, are inserted via this.
  • Through this, the doctor can view the inside of the chest clearly and this enables him to easily locate tumors and nodules in this region. Through this surgery, the collection of biopsy samples and drainage of pleural effusions is also possible.
  • The patient recovers in the hospital for 3-4 days and is asked to come for a follow-up appointment after 7-10 days.

When is it done?:

It is a minimally invasive technique and is done to assist the lung surgery, hiatal hernia repair, thymectomy and other procedures involving the heart, ribs, diaphragm and spine.
