Definition: This type of biopsy is done for an abnormality in the breast that cannot be felt but is seen in a mammogram.
Procedure:
- Two mammograms or ultrasound are taken to confirm the location of the abnormality and then the radiologist numbs this region using a suitable local anesthetic.
- A needle is then inserted in this location and a small wire is threaded through this. The exact location of the needle is monitored using a mammogram to ensure that it is in the right place.
- On reaching the correct spot, the needle is withdrawn and the wire is left intact. The patient is then taken to the surgery for the biopsy.
- Here, the patient is anesthetized and uses the wire to locate the abnormality and removes it. This excised abnormality is then sent to the radiologist for confirmation.
- The process is complete within 20 -30 minutes and the patients usually recover within one day of the surgery.
When is it done?:
