Rectal Cancer: Risk factors

Colorectal Carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm of the colon and rectum is the second most leading cause of death due to cancer in America. Carcinoma of the colon is cancer that starts either in the colon or in the rectum. It starts as an outgrowth in the inner lining of the colon and rectum which are called polyps but not all polyps become cancerous. The two main types of polyps are:

  • Adenomatous polyp: The adenomatous polyp sometimes turns cancerous, and so the adenomas are therefore known as a pre-cancerous condition.
  • Hyperplastic polyp and inflammatory polyp: These types of polyps are non-cancerous in general and are very common too.
