Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) is characterised by an acute onset of fever combined with a change in the mental status and a new onset of seizures. This can affect any person of any age at any time. Although it mostly affects children (usually below the age of 15 years) and results in a considerable morbidity and mortality rates.
Viruses are the main causative agents, but bacteria, fungus, parasites, exposure to certain chemicals or toxins can also be responsible. The symptoms can be a sudden change on body temperature resulting in fever, a state of mental confusion and overall disorientation, some may also slip into a coma. Due to a rapid rate od neurological dysfunction the time frame between diagnosis and treatment is very small, thus leading to high mortality rates.
