Convalescent plasma therapy involves taking the blood plasma from a previously infected person, who has received treatment and recovered, after 28 days from their recovery. Such a plasma is said to have the antibodies to fight that particular infection. This plasma is then given to donor patients who usually have critically weakened immune systems. The antibodies present in the convalescent plasma help fight the infection in the recipient.
Convalescent plasma therapy has been previously used for Ebola virus, SARS, Lassa fever, West Nile encephalitis, and a few others. It has shown positive results and a comparatively accelerated recovery in the recipient.
