Fasciola hepatica is caused by parasitic flatworms Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. They are leaf shape visible worm measure 20-30mm ×13mm. Fasciola hepatica is a parasitic infection seen in humans and many other animals. Fasciola hepatica parasite is not seen in Antarctica. Immature eggs are discharged in the biliary duct. Eggs release snail’s intermediate host. In the snails, the parasites developed and release on aquatic vegetation. Humans and animals get infected by eating contaminated vegetation.

  • Symptoms: – Acute fascioliasis has symptoms like fever, hepatomegaly, and abdominal pain. Chronic fascioliasis has symptoms like pharyngitis, dysphagia, a sensation of a foreign body in the throat also has the possibility of airway obstruction.
  • Treatment: – Bed rest and protein-rich diet are recommended. Also, iron and vitamins supplement is noted. Triclabendazole is recommended. Also, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for parasite removal is also useful.
