Here’s what Cervical Biopsy actually means?

Cervical biopsy

A cervical biopsy is a process that involves the removal of a piece of tissue from the cervix to test for the presence of cancers or any abnormal conditions. For women who showed abnormalities in their pelvic exam or tested positive for HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), the doctor may suggest a cervical biopsy. Apart from performing a biopsy, the same apparatus can also remove a mass from the cervix. It is also used to treat genital conditions like genital warts or polyps (non-cancerous growths).

Certain risks are associated with the procedure, like infection or bleeding, which may also cause miscarriage or infertility in extreme cases. Scheduling the biopsy one week after your period is the ideal time; menstruation or any inflammation in the pelvis or the cervix makes the biopsy inaccurate. The patient may be given general or local anesthesia to numb the region, and afterward, the biopsy will be performed. A dark-colored discharge and cramping are expected for a couple of days after the biopsy. Still, if it persists any longer or you experience fever/chills and a foul-smelling discharge from your vagina, you should contact the doctor immediately.
