Sometimes occult blood is passed in too small amount that could not identify without using chemicals. Fecal occult blood test is only shows hidden blood for detection of source another tests need to be conducted.
- Uses: – Fecal occult blood test is useful for the screening of colon cancer in aged people. Also it is useful in to study the possible causes of anemia.
- Procedure: – Some Foods and dietary intake can affect the test result. Specialist may ask patient to avoid the some fruits and vegetables like broccoli, red meat, horseradish, vitamin C supplements, and pain management medication. The type of fecal occult blood test performed is depends upon reason of testing stool. The following types of fecal occult blood tests are available.
- Guaiac fecal occult blood test (gFOBT):- Doctor gives two or three test cards to the patient. Patient has to collect stool samples from each two to three bowel movements in clean container. Then applicator applies the stool on specific area of card and after sample is dry doctor returns it on the lab.
- Flushable reagent pad or tissue: – In this method Patient borrow kit without prescription and place kit pad in the toilet bowl after bowel movement, after three day color get change if blood is present.
- Immunochemical fecal occult blood test: – Immunochemical testing does not need any dilatory restrictions. And the testing can be performed in random stool samples.
