Ulcerative Colitis: Signs & Symptoms

 

Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease with marked inflammation of the intestinal mucosa. This condition typically involves the anus, rectum and distal colon, and sometimes also affects the large intestine completely. This disease mostly affects people who are in their twenties or in their thirties, it also affects people in their sixties too. This condition increases the risk of developing colon cancer later.

This condition is very much like Crohn’s disease. The fact that both the diseases affect people in their twenties or in their thirties mostly affecting the digestive tract, but where Crohn’s disease affects anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract ulcerative colitis mostly affecting the colon, anus, and rectum.

Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation only in the mucosal layer of the colon, whereas Crohn’s disease causes transmural or submucosal inflammation.
